Jo-Ann Christen

Conductor Emeritus

A Life of Service and Leadership

The energy and spirit that characterizes the Seattle Civic Band comes from our founding conductor and music director, Jo-Ann Christen. Jo-Ann's demanding yet supportive podium demeanor encouraged more out of her musicians than they thought they had to give.

Jo-Ann was a versatile and dynamic conductor who specialized in community based music making. As well as founding multiple bands in the Seattle area, Jo-Ann conducted the Rain City Women's Chorus. She held degrees in music from Montclair State University (NJ) and the Manhattan School of Music. Jo-Ann performed professionally on the trombone and euphonium and taught brass students at her Queen Anne studio.

When asked why she was drawn to community ensembles, Jo-Ann said, "I grew up playing in community bands-it's in my blood. Old and young playing together for the sheer joy of making music."

She retired in December 2012 and has been granted the title, "Founding Conductor Emeritus".

In February 2024, Jo-Ann passed away after a battle with cancer. Seattle Civic Band will be forever grateful for her leadership, musical expertise, and friendship. Thank you, Jo-Ann!
